From late July 2019 we have added in an auto-calculation function so the Energy (in kJ) for ingredients will calculate based on the macro nutrients. This will help ensure the final kJ are correct on products that use those ingredients.
Before this change, users would enter the Energy (kJ) value as a nutrient for an ingredient using data provided by the supplier. This value would then carry through to the products using that ingredient.
With the updated functionality Zubi will use the values entered for the macro-nutrients - Protein, Fat, Carbohydrate and Dietary Fibre to calculate the kJ. This happens automatically as the values are entered into the screen.
If a kJ (or Cal) value has already been entered, Zubi will update it with the calculated value as you enter the macro-nutrients. If you'd prefer to stick with the value provided by the supplier you can go back and override the kJ value after entering all the other values.
To update ingredients already in Zubi just reenter the protein (or fat or carb) and Zubi will recalculate the kJ for that ingredient.
Please beware updating ingredients already used in products will cause the kJ on the products to update and the result may differ to kJ shown previously.
The calculation used for kJ in Zubi is based on section 11-2 in this schedule in the ANZ Food Standards Code. The calculation takes into account energy from the macro-nutrients described above (Protein, Fat, Carbohydrate and Dietary Fibre) but it also looks at Alcohol, Polyols/Sugar Alcohols, Organic Acids, Polydextrose and D-Tagatose if entered - these extras are unlikely for most Zubi users.
We will be reviewing the public ingredients in Zubi to ensure the kJ values are correct using the calculation - this will impact the kJ displayed for products using these ingredients.
