Zubi has an auto-calculation function so that the Energy (in kJ) for ingredients will calculate based on the macronutrients (Protein, Fat, Carbohydrate and Dietary Fibre). This will help ensure the final kJ are correct on products that use those ingredients.
This happens automatically as the values are entered into the screen.
If a kJ (or Cal) value has already been entered, Zubi will update it with the calculated value as you enter the macro-nutrients. If you'd prefer to stick with the value provided by the supplier, you can override the kJ value after entering all the other values.
This function was added in July 2019. If you have ingredients added before that time, to update them just reenter the protein (or fat or carbohydrates) and Zubi will recalculate the kJ for that ingredient.
Please beware that updating ingredients already used in products will cause the kJ on the products to update and the result may differ to kJ shown previously. You may need to update your product labels accordingly.
The calculation used for kJ in Zubi is based on section 11-2 in this schedule in the ANZ Food Standards Code. The calculation takes into account energy from the macro-nutrients described above (Protein, Fat, Carbohydrate and Dietary Fibre) but it also looks at Alcohol, Polyols/Sugar Alcohols, Organic Acids, Polydextrose and D-Tagatose if entered - these extras are unlikely for most Zubi users.
We will be reviewing the public ingredients in Zubi to ensure the kJ values are correct using the calculation - this will impact the kJ displayed for products using these ingredients.
